A foundation for long-term health and strength

I have been watching the rise of Pilates over the years, and with that has come an increasing number of teachers emerging from short courses. While it is great to see more people discovering Pilates and having access to it, I have noticed that many of these new teachers are not transmitting the true values of Pilates. This is something I feel deeply passionate about because Pilates has such a rich and sensible history, and it is important that the core principles of the method are passed down through properly trained teachers.

Joseph Pilates created this discipline as a foundation for a well-balanced daily life, a method to support the body in overcoming injuries, improving the mind-body connection, and fostering overall wellness. Unlike typical fitness classes, Pilates is not just about getting a good workout; it’s about understanding your body, learning how to use it better, and cultivating mindfulness in movement.

The Evolution of Pilates

Pilates has certainly evolved over the years, and as we face modern challenges like prolonged sitting and sedentary work, the method has adapted to meet the needs of today’s bodies. It’s no longer just for rehabilitation; Pilates is now an essential tool for maintaining mobility, strength, and health in general. However, I think it’s essential to remember that while Pilates has evolved, its core principles remain the same.

Today’s teachers are equipped with updated knowledge of biomechanics, posture, and alignment, and they can tailor exercises to suit the individual needs of each body. Pilates teachers gain their experience on the ground. The more bodies they see and work with, the more personal research they do, the more experienced and prepared they are to work with a wide range of individuals and ailments. Whether you are an athlete, managing chronic pain, or just looking to maintain a healthy body, Pilates remains one of the best ways to support long-term well-being. But this can only be achieved with the guidance of a well-trained teacher who knows how to adapt the exercises to suit your specific needs.

Fitness Pilates vs. Proper Pilates

Over the past couple of years, I have seen more and more “fitness Pilates” classes pop up, and while these may seem like a fun, fast-paced workout, they often miss the deep, mindful connection to movement that’s at the heart of the Pilates method. Pilates was originally developed as a rehabilitation tool, and it’s meant to be performed slowly. This allows the body time to understand, adapt, and adjust to each movement, creating new habits. I believe that rushing through exercises can lead to poor form and ineffective results, particularly for those recovering from injury or dealing with chronic pain.

Proper Pilates is not about speed; it is about awareness, precision, and control. It is a practice that connects the body and mind. When Pilates is performed at the right pace, with the correct alignment, and under the guidance of a knowledgeable teacher, it becomes so much more than just a workout; it becomes a tool for lasting health and transformation.

Why the Right Teacher Matters

I truly believe that the role of a Pilates teacher is crucial in transmitting the true values of the method. A good teacher ensures that each client is performing exercises safely, with proper technique, and at a pace that allows the body to adjust and strengthen over time. They provide feedback, adjust exercises for individual needs, and offer the kind of support that makes Pilates an accessible practice for everyone.

With so many options available around us, it is easy to get caught up in the idea of a quick fix, but we know that there is no such thing as a quick fix. However, it is important to remember that proper Pilates is a practice that requires time, dedication, and understanding. A properly trained teacher is not someone who champions a list of exercises from the repertoire, but rather someone who can guide you on this journey, helping you unlock the actual benefits of Pilates, both physically and mentally, as well as emotionally.
